Biking St. Simons Island

Just a beautiful weekend here on St. Simons Island.  Fall is my favorite time of the year!  I pulled out my bike, rounded up the kids from the couch and the three of us set out for an island bike ride.  We managed just under 8 miles today on our winding ride around the island.  Our first stop was at East Beach to check out the beach crowd which was quite busy.  Temps yesterday topped out in the mid 80s and today it was sunny and in the mid 70s so lots of people were out and about and a good portion were at the beach.

We headed from the beach down along Ocean Blvd to the "Village" where my daughters chose Dairy Queen for lunch.  After a couple of burgers and shakes we were back on the road to pick up a spare kid.  Our troupe now numbering four, we made our way down along Demeree past the St. Simons Airport, around the traffic circle and over to Starbucks.  I love Starbucks as it is a great place for the kids and I to hang out for a bit, have a smoothie, frapacino or in my case an Americano.  They have great wifi and it has just become 'our place' to hang out. The girls all fiddle with their iPhones, gossip back and forth and for the most part ignore me.  At least until I can find a point to interject something funny to keep up.  Well after Starbucks we were headed back to the house where the girls all got ready to go see a movie at the Island Cinemas.  So I now have a few minutes to myself to catch up on the news and check in with my blog.

I really like that St. Simons Island is crisscrossed in bike trails, you can really enjoy the island in a low impact, easy going tour.  I blogged about my new Townie bike a few months ago and I have to tell you it is really holding up.  I did customize it with a new cup holder, an iPhone holder and a rack on the back to make my trips a little more fun.  I also downloaded a new app called Road Bike Pro.  It tracks my progress while out on my bike so that I can view my route, speed, etc.  Great app for someone like me!  They also have fitness apps and running apps from the same company.

Bikes lined up after an afternoon ride!

So whether it is walking/running, biking, or driving a golf cart or car, St. Simons is a great place to be outdoors!  As always I like to give a shout out to Chris at Monkey Wrench Bikes SSI.   They really are the best bikes around.  I rode my old mountain bike last week for about 5 feet before asking my daughter for my Townie back, much to her chagrin.  It really is a case of apples and pineapples!

Of note:  I've sold the 2 bedroom condo listed on my blog and just put the 3 bedroom condo under contract to sell the first week of November.  There are still great deals to be had on St. Simons Island, Jekyll Island and Brunswick.  I will have a Jekyll Island 3 bedroom 2 bath oceanfront condo coming onto the market soon along with a beautiful home with a pool, just a few miles from the FLETC front gate coming too.

I just learned of a beautiful condo in Sea Palms at The Oaks, mid North end of the island, that has been reduced to $140,000!  This is an awesome deal for Sea Palms and The Oaks is just across the street from the clubhouse and resort pool. These Sea Palms condos are a great investment as they are almost always busy in the rental program or they're great for your golf getaway condo on St. Simons.

Call or email me for more information/photos and we can set up to see it.

Christmas Creek Entrance

UPDATE: 10-25-13 The Christmas Creek entrance this year is to the North of the creek mouth.  As you go South along Cumberland Beach you'll see the shoaling a few hundred yards East of the mouth of the creek.  Enter Christmas Creek between the shoaling and the beach as you go South.  As you enter the entrance between the shoals and the beach, look for your hard right turn to go directly into the creek mouth.  Best to try at least an hour after low tide for that area.  If you plan on coming out after high tide, best to be at the mouth no later than 4 1/2 hours after high tide unless your boat draws less than a foot like flats boats and Carolina Skifs.  I like to go in about an hour after low tide and fish through the rising tide and then make my way out.   I made this update because this Blog post is one of my top posts which I wouldn't have know when I originally wrote it. Christmas Creek has some of the best fishing around and if you are new to it or would like to try

How to catch Blue Crabs on St. Simons Island

I know I love to eat our local blue crabs and if you do too, then here is an excellent video from Capt. Mark Noble.  Mark has been a long time friend of mine and he grew up on St. Simons Island.  There are many ways to catch blue crabs and in this video Mark can show you how he does it.  You don't need a boat either - I've caught some beautiful stone crabs with a crab net right off one of the many docks that surround the area.  Many times, I'll hang a crab net off the back of my boat while I'm fishing and catch plenty.  So a crab net off the St. Simons Pier or one or two of the crab baskets in this video and you can have yourself a big time. Here's Mark's website - he is one of the top charter captains around so check him out if you'd like to take a Golden Isles fishing charter.  http://www.georgiafishing.net I shot the video and edited this for Mark and as my reward, he let me take the crabs home for a terrific family crab boil!

4th of July on St. Simons Island Georgia

It really has been a super busy July 4th week!  Of course there were fireworks on the 4th and we watched them from East Beach on St. Simons Island.  From our vantage point, you could see the fireworks on Jekyll Island, St. Simons Island AND Sea Island.  Three for the price of one!  The weather was perfect albeit a bit warm but sitting on the beach at night with fireworks going off was just a fun time.  St. Simons Island is always busy around the 4th of July and this year was no exception.  Visitors flocked to our island and hotels, condos and rental homes all seemed to be maxed out.  The weekend after the 4th was just as busy with the big event being the St. Simons Island Kids Fishing Rodeo.  This is an annual event hosted by Captain Billy Bice.  It is a very easy going children's fishing tournament where you catch a Redfish - Whiting - Bluefish (Red White and Blue).  Every child wins a prize and kids who catch all three of the fish listed win a rod and reel combo worth a
