How to catch Blue Crabs on St. Simons Island

I know I love to eat our local blue crabs and if you do too, then here is an excellent video from Capt. Mark Noble.  Mark has been a long time friend of mine and he grew up on St. Simons Island.  There are many ways to catch blue crabs and in this video Mark can show you how he does it.  You don't need a boat either - I've caught some beautiful stone crabs with a crab net right off one of the many docks that surround the area.  Many times, I'll hang a crab net off the back of my boat while I'm fishing and catch plenty.  So a crab net off the St. Simons Pier or one or two of the crab baskets in this video and you can have yourself a big time. Here's Mark's website - he is one of the top charter captains around so check him out if you'd like to take a Golden Isles fishing charter.  http://www.georgiafishing.net I shot the video and edited this for Mark and as my reward, he let me take the crabs home for a terrific family crab boil!   ...

Saint Simons Island upcoming fun Events!

There are tons of things to do on St. Simons Island that don't have to do with the beach!  There are a few fun events going on around the island in November and I thought I might clue you in on a them.  These are events we locals know about and love but enjoy seeing new faces at too! If you are going to be down this weekend the Brunswick Stewbilee is going on in Brunswick.  The Brunswick Rockin' Stewbilee is back for its 14th year and is better than ever! There will be music by the WharfRatz and Backbeat Boulevard, fun for all ages, and, of course, lots of the stew that made Brunswick, Georgia famous. There's a 5k run, a fun run for the kids, an antique and classic car show, a pooch parade, and the Brunswick stew cook-off. Bring the kids and let them have a blast at Junior Stewbilee Central. All proceeds go to the Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Georgia.  Tickets are $9 for adults & $4 for children under 6 and are available at the gate on the day ...

Biking St. Simons Island

Just a beautiful weekend here on St. Simons Island.  Fall is my favorite time of the year!  I pulled out my bike, rounded up the kids from the couch and the three of us set out for an island bike ride.  We managed just under 8 miles today on our winding ride around the island.  Our first stop was at East Beach to check out the beach crowd which was quite busy.  Temps yesterday topped out in the mid 80s and today it was sunny and in the mid 70s so lots of people were out and about and a good portion were at the beach.   We headed from the beach down along Ocean Blvd to the "Village" where my daughters chose Dairy Queen for lunch.  After a couple of burgers and shakes we were back on the road to pick up a spare kid.  Our troupe now numbering four, we made our way down along Demeree past the St. Simons Airport, around the traffic circle and over to Starbucks.  I love Starbucks as it is a great place for the kids and I to hang out for a bi...

The best bike for Island life!

Living on the coast of Georgia is a lot of fun and if you choose an active lifestyle, a bicycle is must have.  I have owned a lot of bikes in my life starting with a brand new burnt red 10 speed Schwinn my parents bought for me back in 1977.  It was too big for me but I grew into it after a year or so and then enjoyed the heck out of it until it was finally stolen out of our garage a few years later.  I gave up bikes when I got my first car, a 1971 Plymouth Duster but found myself back on the bike during my college years.  Later, I moved into downtown Savannah where a bicycle is a must have due to parking shortages. When I first moved to St. Simons almost 4 years ago, I purchased a new 21 speed Schwinn hybrid.  It is a mix of a mountain bike frame with road bike tires.  I disliked the bike from the first time I rode it which really hampered my enthusiasm for riding around the island.  So basically, I parked the bike and on a whim would ride it and th...

6 Reasons to Reduce Your Home Price

By: G. M. Filisko While you'd like to get the best price for your home, consider our six reasons to reduce your home price.  These six signs may be telling you it’s time to lower your price. 1. You’re drawing few lookers You get the most interest in your home right after you put it on the market because buyers want to catch a great new home before anybody else takes it. If your real estate agent reports there have been fewer buyers calling about and asking to tour your home than there have been for other homes in your area, that may be a sign buyers think it’s overpriced and are waiting for the price to fall before viewing it. 2. You’re drawing lots of lookers but have no offers If you’ve had 30 sets of potential buyers come through your home and not a single one has made an offer, something is off. What are other agents telling your agent about your home? An overly high price may be discouraging buyers from making an offer. 3. Your home’s b...
