Savannah Day Trip

Being from Savannah, I really love the fact that I live just an hour or so South.  To get to Savannah from St. Simons Island is very easy and that makes for a fun day trip up to the Historic City and surrounding area.

Mindy, my girlfriend, and I hopped onto Interstate 95 North and in no time at all found ourselves in Savannah.  We stopped by my Grandparent's retirement community to spend some time visiting.   Grandma Mary and Grandpa Chuck were a lot of fun to visit and I always enjoy hearing how things are going with them.  They are in a really nice retirement center http://www.holidaytouch.com/Our-Communities/rivers-edge.aspx which makes it easy and fun to stop in for a visit.

Next on the list was a bit of shopping for Mindy.  I thought she needed a brand new dress for an upcoming Golden Isles Association of Realtors get-together at the Brunswick Country Club in May. My Grandparent's retirement center is just a few blocks from the Oglethorpe Mall so we thought a quick stop there would be easy and convenient.  With a beautiful new dress for Mindy in the bag, we had the whole day open to us.

We decided to drive out to Tybee Island, another Georgia island where my parent's owned a home for many years.  We managed a driving tour of the whole island from the Southern tip with it's beaches to the Northern end with Ft. Screven, historic homes on Officer's Row and the Tybee Lighthouse.

Tybee is much busier than I remember from years ago and there are now several large hotels on the beach along with a really cool pier.  Some things never change though and that was doubly so for the parking.  I saw lots of tickets on vehicles and the 'parking people' all over the place.  I also saw several signs stating parking regs are enforced 7 days a week.  While St. Simons Island can get crowded from time to time and we have our own parking issues, I did see a visible difference in what life is like on St. Simons Island versus Tybee Island.  St. Simons is much more relaxed and easy going.  Tybee seemed very busy and fast, more like a Florida beach town.  Gives me a much better appreciation for the laid back 'quiet' island I live on.

We left Tybee and headed to the Historic District of Savannah to meet up with my Aunt.  She lives on Taylor Street just across the street from the famed Mercer House that everyone has read about in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (and the movie).  Mindy and I enjoyed chatting with Candi before we all decided to go for Thai at Ruan Thai Restaurant on Broughton Street. http://myruanthai.com/main.html

Unbelieveably, I found a primo parking spot right on Broughton Street and only a block from Ruan!  I was so happy to see Broughton Street busy though compared to the days back in the 1980's where it was dimpled with boarded up storefronts and title pawn stores.  Now it is a vibrant shopping and eating location.

After a delicious meal and great conversation (I really enjoyed my Pineapple Red Curry Shrimp!) we dropped Candi off and Mindy and I headed back to St. Simons getting in around 11:15pm.  A great day trip to Savannah and Tybee but we were both glad to be back on our Coastal Georgia Island.

Christmas Creek Entrance

UPDATE: 10-25-13 The Christmas Creek entrance this year is to the North of the creek mouth.  As you go South along Cumberland Beach you'll see the shoaling a few hundred yards East of the mouth of the creek.  Enter Christmas Creek between the shoaling and the beach as you go South.  As you enter the entrance between the shoals and the beach, look for your hard right turn to go directly into the creek mouth.  Best to try at least an hour after low tide for that area.  If you plan on coming out after high tide, best to be at the mouth no later than 4 1/2 hours after high tide unless your boat draws less than a foot like flats boats and Carolina Skifs.  I like to go in about an hour after low tide and fish through the rising tide and then make my way out.   I made this update because this Blog post is one of my top posts which I wouldn't have know when I originally wrote it. Christmas Creek has some of the best fishing around and if you are new to it or would like to try

How to catch Blue Crabs on St. Simons Island

I know I love to eat our local blue crabs and if you do too, then here is an excellent video from Capt. Mark Noble.  Mark has been a long time friend of mine and he grew up on St. Simons Island.  There are many ways to catch blue crabs and in this video Mark can show you how he does it.  You don't need a boat either - I've caught some beautiful stone crabs with a crab net right off one of the many docks that surround the area.  Many times, I'll hang a crab net off the back of my boat while I'm fishing and catch plenty.  So a crab net off the St. Simons Pier or one or two of the crab baskets in this video and you can have yourself a big time. Here's Mark's website - he is one of the top charter captains around so check him out if you'd like to take a Golden Isles fishing charter.  http://www.georgiafishing.net I shot the video and edited this for Mark and as my reward, he let me take the crabs home for a terrific family crab boil!

Jekyll Island Horseback Riding

The girls and I had the boat out on Saturday.  We anchored just off of Jekyll Island on the St. Simons Sound side.  The girls went swimming and walking along the beach.  Before too long, a group riding horses on the beach came strolling by.  I really love horses and have been riding them myself for many years - whenever possible.  I do a lot of fishing down around Cumberland Island which is well known as a Georgia island that still has a population of wild horses.  There are positive and negatives to this population of horses.  While they are protected from people, they are not allowed to be cared for at all whether it is food or vet needs.  I see lots of horses and new foals in the marshes munching on seagrass and walking along the beach.  It is always a real treat to see one of Cumberland Island's wild horses! Just another great part about living along Georgia's Coast. The next time you are visiting Jekyll Island, a great idea would be to do a trail ride along the beach.
